Spring Gardening Tips for Lawns, Gardens & Trees
/1. Lawn Care Tips
Before you get started, wait until the soil dries out to do heavy yard work. This will keep the soil from compacting and also from damaging new the grass shoots. Once the soil has dried out, rake up dead leaves and fallen debris and fluff up the grass. Then decide if you want to plant or do weed control. The herbicides will prevent the grass seeds from sprouting. You can also aerate in the spring, but it's best to do it after the lawn has been mown 2-3 times.
2. Gardening Tips
Clean out old mulch and dead annual plants that remained over winter. Prune back the dead growth on your perennials when you see new growth beginning at the base of the plants. Top dress your garden beds with compost, manure or slow release fertilizer. Mulch your beds too. Mulch conserves water, cools plant roots, feeds the soil, and smothers weeds.
3. Spring Tree Care
Trees need love too. Clean out around the base of trees and mulch there. Keep the mulch from going right up against the trunk though. That can harbor diseases. This is a great time to fertilize your trees too with a slow-release fertilizer. In the spring you can prune off dead branches. Further pruning for shape, etc is better done when the tree is dormant.
